My Feminist Bathroom
My private practice bathroom has slowly been undergoing an exciting transformation: it is a place of quiet contemplation steeped in female-centric energy and treasures. Most of the feminist objects adorn a small nook surrounding la toilette: a carefully-curated bookshelf of volumes by -- and about – women; a framed excerpt of Ursula Le Guin’s writing that is particularly well-suited for women navigating low-milk supply; small works of art; and a depiction of all kinds of breasts, since all breasts (regardless of their milk-producing ability) are worthy of acceptance & appreciation.
Perhaps my favorite work of art is an original linocut print entitled, Three for Joy, which shows three women jumping into water. It’s a fantastic metaphor for group therapy: you might not know exactly what you’re jumping into, but you’re taking a leap anyway because you’re brave and have wisely intuited that once you jump, you’ll be happy you did.
